Pallanza has a long history of tourism. Thanks to its optimal ecological situation, it became a destination for European aristocrats as early as the 18th century.

The demand for tourism grew and gave rise to the need for new accommodation facilities.

Belvedere

The Hotel Belvedere, which stands right in front of the landing stage and next to the San Gottardo, was originally called Belle Vue and was designed to welcome tourists who wanted an environment full of comfort and taste.

San Gottardo

The Hotel San Gottardo was built in 1890. At first it was an inn, a stopping place for stagecoaches, carriages to change horses, and vehicles in transit to the Simplon Pass. During the Second World War, it became a place for displaced persons, especially from Lombardy, specifically from Milan. During this period, the mother of Paolo Mosca, journalist and writer who was born in Pallanza in 1943, and brother of Maurizio Mosca, journalist and television presenter, stayed at the Hotel San Gottardo.

Pallanza

Elegantly overlooking the shores of the picturesque Lake Maggiore, Pallanza occupies a privileged position facing the Borromean Gulf, constituting, together with Intra, one of the two main settlements that make up the municipality of Verbania.

With its roots going back to Roman antiquity, as evidenced by a marble votive stone from the 1st century A.D., preserved in the Church of Santo Stefano, Pallanza is today a popular tourist destination, enriched by a variety of villas and parks.

The historic heart of the town is criss-crossed by picturesque districts and squares, lined with majestic period buildings adorned with portals, porticoes, capitals and archivolts. Along Pallanza’s picturesque lakeside promenade, considered to be among the most beautiful on Lake Maggiore, is an enchanting promenade offering a panoramic view of the archipelago of the Borromean Islands on one side and, on the other, colourful façades, arcades, flower-filled balconies, terraces and cosy cafés. This lively and animated stretch, frequented by tourists both day and night, is the town’s main meeting point.
